How to celebrate Black History Month on social media

How to celebrate Black History Month on social media with examples

February is Black History Month in the United States and Canada. It's a dedicated time to teach Black history, amplify Black voices, and advocate for change. There are countless ways to celebrate Black History Month, but we've highlighted a few here pertaining to social media and small business.

Outlined below are four major ways your small business can celebrate Black History Month on social media.

Support Black-owned businesses and encourage others to do the same

With the Coronavirus pandemic shuttering so many organizations across the world, small businesses are in need of our support, and Black-owned small businesses are in even more need than others. According to a study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Black-owned businesses were more than twice as likely to shutter as their white counterparts. Black History Month is a time to highlight the Black-owned small businesses you love and recommend on social media. If you run a Black-owned business, encourage followers to celebrate and support your business.

Go beyond the quote post

In 2020, many individuals and brands shared quotes by influential Black authors and activists, but the support often ended there. Be sure to share information on social with a goal in mind. Are you sharing Black history? Are you educating others or yourself? Are you sharing ways to amplify Black voices? Are you stepping aside to highlight a Black creator? Consider the purpose of your content on social media to ensure that it's appropriate and impactful.

Celebrate Black history year round

With more and more conversations around anti-racism and social justice taking place, it's also important to support Black creators and businesses year round, not just during Black History Month. Make mindful decisions about when and how to celebrate the Black community, and how it would fit into your overall content plan in the future.
